Athletic Training

The Athletic Training Room is to be used for athletes of Roosevelt High School to be evaluated, treated, educated, and rehabilitated after a sports injury under the supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer, Jodi Loecke, MSPT/ATC.  This room is also to house the RHS Student Athletic Training Program and serve as an environment for learning.

USE

Please ensure all athletes see Jodi Loecke in the case of a sports injury.  In order to make athletes’ health care more efficient and effective and streamline the process, the time and the cost, please use Jodi as a point person to manage the athlete’s care.  She will oversee communication with physicians, parents and other members of the health care team in attempts to provide high quality care.  The training room will be open on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30-5:30 and coverage will be provided at all home Varsity RHS events.  If Jodi is not available, please contact her at (970)371-5345 to set up an appointment for an athlete to be seen.  The preference would be to see these athletes as close to the time of injury as possible.  You can also email her at jsloecke@comcast.net.

STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM

Up to 6 students will be enrolled in the student program each year.  They receive 2 credits a year, and like a class, they have expectations to maintain.  They have to maintain a 3.0 GPA, have 3 letters of recommendation, cover 2 afternoons a week in the training room, and cover 1 varsity event a week in the evening.  They will learn and practice evaluation, and rehabilitation of injuries as well as how to effectively work with a lot of different people and professionals in a health care setting that is high energy and very busy.  It is expected they take 2 quizzes a semester, a taping test and a project or paper dealing with sports medicine.  They should act professional at all times and will always be supervised by the Head Athletic Trainer.  If you would like more information on this program please let Jodi know.

CONCUSSION POLICY

It is imperative that any athlete suffering a blow to the head by any mechanism, be evaluated for a concussion due to the potential morbidity and mortality of the injury as well as the liability associated with it.  RHS follows the Colorado Center for Concussion, Children’s Hospital, NFL, Center for Disease Control and NCAA guidelines.  Research is constantly emerging on this injury and these guidelines will be updated according to current literature.  PLEASE COMMUNICATE ABOUT THESE IMMEDIATELY as it requires a lot of follow-up with parents, doctors, teachers and so on.  Any athlete suffering a blow to the head and potential symptoms after will follow:

*A SCAT test or SAC test to evaluate for possible concussion

(this test will be repeated until the athlete is symptom free and can pass)

*A referral to a physician if there are any symptoms indicating a possible concussion

(legally required in the state of Colorado)

*A 6 step return to play protocol

*Email communication to alert educators/school nurse/staff about a possible concussion and implement return-to learn guidelines

Please contact Jodi if you would like more information on this protocol.

FEEDBACK/COMMUNICATION

Please see Jodi if you have any concerns or ideas about the training room.  The goal is to provide high quality care and manage injuries efficiently in a very busy, fast-paced environment utilizing all resources available and communicating effectively to all of you.  My goal is to keep all the athletes performing at their very best!
