History of Roosevelt Track and Field

Roosevelt High School Track and Field History

Track and Field, as well as Cross Country have a storied past at Roosevelt. They both have one person in common Randall Hess. Johnstown High School was always a power in Track & Field and yearly hosted the Johnstown Invitational at the cinder track at the old Johnstown High School complex located North of Charlotte St, East of Estes Avenue, South of North 1st Place and West of Columbine Avenue. The only evidence left of the old complex is part of the red brick Bus Garage on Charlotte St. The Johnstown High School was torn down in 1969 and houses filled in the area where the School and Track/Football Field once was. Johnstown High School colors were Maroon and White.

In 1962 with the consolidation of Johnstown and Milliken High Schools, Roosevelt High was formed. Milliken High School colors were Purple and White. Roosevelt continued track tradition with the newly named Roosevelt Invitational in 1963 at the old Johnstown High field through 1970. In 1968 the current Roosevelt High School was build and the present track/football field installed in 1971 using the grass from the old Johnstown High School field to sod it.

Roosevelt was one of the first schools to have an all weather (rubber surfaced) track installed in 1987. In the first years, track athletes from the University of Northern Colorado would come over and practice on the RHS track as it was the only rubber surfaced track in the area.

Coach Randall Hess was instrumental in bringing a high level of competition to the Track and Field program. Many great athletes, such as Larry Reimer, Danny Rouse, and Rod Rutt, just to name a few were products of his expertise track & field. In 2001 the Roosevelt Invitational was changed to the Randall Hess Invitational to honor him for his dedication and years of service.
