Riders land 2nd at Top of the Rockies

LAFAYETTE — Roosevelt scored 163 points to finish second at the 32-team, multi-state Top of the Rockies wrestling tournament at Centaurus High School on Saturday.
The Rough Riders were the only Colorado team in the top three, finishing behind team champion Grand Island (Neb.), which scored 178, and a spot ahead of Rio Rancho (N.M.), which had 159.
Roosevelt had seven wrestlers placed in the top six: freshman Jace Lopez (23-4, 2nd, 103), junior CJ York (22-3, 4th, 125), senior Zach Legino (23-6, 5th, 140), senior Blake Nygren (25-4, 3rd, 160), sophomore Juan Sanchez (15-6, 4th, 171), senior Steven Koenig (18-10, 5th, 189) and senior Travis Cary (20-7, 6th, 215).
Greeley West (99) finished ninth behind 103-pound champion Emilio Martinez (24-1) — who topped Lopez 5-4 in the finals — and junior Joseph Martinez (24-1, 2nd, 125).
Joseph Martinez placed second at 125, losing 3-1 to St. James Academy (Kan.) junior Taylor Moeder (25-0) in the finals.
Northridge (60th) was 18th with senior Robert Pickrell (12-0) finishing first at 160, and senior Trevor Fritzler (23-3) placing fourth at 189.
Fort Lupton (37) placed 28th behind senior Anthony Deleon (24-6), who was sixth at 103. Greeley Central (32) was 30th.
